But he was largely correct in his explanation of erosion, sedimentation, and the movement of land and water during earthquakes, tidal waves, and floods. His reasoning leads him to imagine the presence of vanished ancient seas: "I do not see therefore in what way the said shells could have come to be so far inland unless they had been born there." (9r)
